The first day Genesis 1V1-5

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

The first page of redemption
The beginning with no beginning transcends human logic for everything we know has a beginning except God. The eternal cannot be explained by human reason for we are time orientated beings and yet created with an eternal existence . And beyond that we also must accept that and invisible God created the visible and so something physical came out of something invisible and the very thing we might condemn science for 
suggesting is what we are advancing BUT with one exception. God has revealed Himself in other miraculous ways that defy the laws of science and therefore we must either accept who God is in His completer eternal authority and power or reject HIm But what alternative do we have, short answer nothing. We must accept Gods word, that He spake and it was done. He created everything, the awesome being of God. I take it v1 is describing the original creation in its first and unshaped state, the raw 
materials with which God will work. But WHY? Why did God in the eternal ages go to the trouble of creating a universe, world in which man would rebel? Here after all is the introduction to what God has willed and decided to do. Is it not that God did so with a redeemer by his side who also is creator according to John 1. It is a revelation of His Son and the purpose to take a bride for Himself and to enjoy fellowship joined to a redeemed people eternally the object of His love. We are the object of His heart and the creation unfolded in Genesis 1 introduces us to the principles and conditions of how God will have fellowship with that which he has created for his pleasure and glory.
We are looking at the raw materials of redemption, the preface to redemptions plan. The generations that begin the descent of man to THE man and THE redeemer.

The Spirit of God - power to work
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The created planet had little shape or light to sustain life, It was in darkness and then God moved. The Spirit of God is now activated in his work of moving upon the face of waters. The same Spirit that was active in the incarnation is seen first in 
creation. Notice the title ‘Spirit of God’ The Spirit in the NT is often referred to as the Holy Spirit because it is the main channel through which the believer achieves holiness. But here it is the power of God manifest in creation. The Spirit’s movement is 
compared in John 3 like the wind, invisible but visible in it’s 
effects, so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Fellowship through God’s word
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
The raw power of the Spirit of God and the word of God is manifest in this first flash of divine brilliance. Illumination is essential for creation to have visibility and viability for life.  Psalm 33 reminds us of this power and the influence it should have upon men, “Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.” When it comes to creation we must believe that the Heavens were framed by the word of God. We can ask who created God and we must answer “the word of God says He is eternal” and so we are always brought back not to the fossil record but the divine record. And God said

Fellowship needs light
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
Gods purpose begins to unfold in this first day as we read not only that God spoke but God saw. This chapter is the first revelation of God’s holy character as well as a revelation of Creation. Why did God see the light that it was good? It can only be due to the fact that it fulfilled God’s intended purpose for which light was introduced - something that was distinct and warranted being divided from the darkness.
Here is another divine principle being established on day 1 in relation to fellowship and it is that light has no fellowship with darkness, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?” We have been called into the fellowship of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ and in this we must walk in the light as he is in the light and we have fellowship one with another. God is teaching us in Gen 1 that fellowship with God must be enjoyed with him in light. In the eternal state there will be no nigh and no darkness because it will be the unbroken fellowship of a new creation.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. 
And the evening and the morning were the first day.
God’s order requires names to be attached to what he creates. The divine mind not only divided physically light and darkness but now introduces us to distinction in identity so that these two opposites will mark  the first known period of time, marking a difference from the endless ages of eternity where time is meaningless to a day where time is measured. “The first” reveals that there will be a second and a last. What a day the first day was in creation and what a day it is in redemption. We all have a first day when we were physically born and spiritually born and that first day was marked by light.  

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
Psalm 19:1-3 is God’s own commentary on Genesis 1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.” Creation has a language itself and it not only reveals the word of God, the Spirit of God but also the glory and greatness of God. The brightness of God’s glory shines to this day in creation and the firmament in the midst of the waters reveals God’s power not only to create the elements but to move them and divide them. One day he would divide the waters of a sea on a horizontal plain to allow a redeemed people to pass through - no real miracle to one who divided all the waters vertically to create the sky. It shews His handiwork.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
What God did and what God said were perfectly consistant, yet another principle and revelation of God’s character in this work. When it came to Calvary the work of Christ was also 100% consistant with what He said He would do. Such is Deity

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.  
Heaven is named - the stellar Heaven (plural) and so the second day is marked by an evening and a morning. And we have moved from the realm of creation and illumination to the work of separation. God’s holy order is unfolding upon the stage of time.

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
Focus returns to the waters under the expanse of sky - the heaven. God has separated and upon separation he gathers together the waters unto one place. One body of water and in doing so reveals dry land. A miracle for we would expect wet land. But just as Israel walked through on dry land God has made land already habitable for man. Perhaps wet ground was not part of the original creation, the climate maybe cause d it to dry instantly. Why did God do all this on separate days? Why did he not do it all on one day or on the second day? He is obviously wanting to distinguish between each act and work showing an order that is progressive in the six days.
Illumination, separation and now revelation as the land appears. He could have created the planet with the seas already gathered and the land in place but he choose not to. He is teaching us spiritual lessons. How he loves to gather his people into one place.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
And so he acts and he names following the same order, create, name, approve. The earth and the Seas. One of the great contrasting pairs that God presents. Night and Day, Light and dark, Earth and Seas. Genesis one is a chapter of contrasts and opposites. God sees that this is fulfilling His purpose. Were it all water man could never exist and were it all land the climate would not function. Upon this dry land the redeemer by his side would be born one day yet growing up he would show his Deity and creatorial power by walking on the seas and displaying complete control over the climate and weather systems of our planet.
